Roland Wauer (01.01.1942-13.07.2020), paediatrician, neonatologist, former Clinic Director of Neonatology and Paediatric Intensive Care Therapy, and Vice-Dean for Young Scientists at the Charité.
Roland R. Wauer studied medicine from 1961 to 1967 in Sofia, Bulgaria, and in Berlin and received his doctorate in paediatrics in 1969. As one of the first neonatologists in Europe, he worked under Prof. Ingeborg Rapoport at the Charité and was significantly involved in the medical-technical progress of the field of neonatology. His special field of interest was respiratory distress syndrome in premature babies and sick neonates. A spirit of research, a burning passion for medicine, empathy, respect for life and a thirst for action defined his work and the values he passed on to his students.
The Roland R. Wauer Award was established after Roland R. Wauer's death. The Deutsche Stiftung Kranke Neugeborene (DSKN) and the European Society for Paediatric Research (ESPR) want to honour a great neonatologist with the award as well as to continue one of his life's goals: to educate young people, to awaken their interest in this still rather young field, to provide space for exchange and future innovation.
To this end, the award winners will have 1500 € at their disposal to enable them to spend one month in an excellent neonatal institution within Europe. In consultation with the professors there, the individual insight into the daily routine of the ward and/or research will take place. Accommodation and travel are organised independently by the award winner. In addition, he or she records his or her experiences and new insights online and in a publicly accessible form.
