28 September

My day started with the handover in the NICU. This time, a national study on antibiotic therapy in early onset sepsis in mature newborns was discussed. The results show that oral administration is not inferior to intravenous administration. This would be very convenient for parents as they could treat their child with it at home instead of in hospital as is usual with intravenous administration. It continued for me at the minor students' class. Today it was embryology of the heart and vessels. Afterwards, we dealt with congenital heart defects and had a practical in which we were allowed to examine real hearts for their congenital malformations. This was an absolute highlight for me, as I had never been able to hold a hypoplastic left heart or a transposition of the great arteries in my hands before. After the internship, I went into town and visited the Burcht, an earthen mound with a circular wall built on it, which was probably heaped up almost 1000 years ago. There were even a few collared parakeets flying around and singing on the trees inside the burcht.
