12 September

My day started with an appointment at the VGM (Veiligheid, Gezondheid en Milieu) for MRSA screening. The VGM is a competence centre that deals with safety, health and the environment and, among other things, tests every future employee at LUMC for multi-resistant pathogens. The Netherlands has very low rates of MRSA compared to other European countries, which is due to the strict prevention policy in hospitals. Every patient who belongs to the risk groups is isolated until a negative test result is obtained. Risk factors include: recent admission to a foreign hospital, and contact with pigs/calves/chickens in agriculture.

As Prof. Arjan Te Pas was not available today, my first day at LUMC starts tomorrow. However, I was able to admire the hospital from the outside and otherwise walked around Leiden a bit and explored the city.
